Select sample plants
- Sample each irrigation zone and cultivar separately, at about 1 plant per 200 ft² of canopy.
- Pick plants that represent the front, middle, back, and edges of each zone.
- Tag, number, and record each plant’s location. Check the same plants daily.
Verify emitter output
- Place each sample plant’s emitters in a measuring cup labelled with its sample number.
- Run a 1-minute irrigation event.
- Record each volume, then return the emitters to their original positions.
- Compare against the expected one-minute output. Aim for under 8% deviation. At 8% or more, check for clogs, pressure problems, or equipment issues.
Deviation % = |measured − expected| ÷ expected × 100
Verify runoff timing
- Set each sample plant in a labelled, empty collection basin so runoff drains freely and the substrate stays above the collected solution. Use an opaque container sized to fit, to limit light and evaporation.
- During the plan’s projected first runoff window, record whether runoff is present or absent for each plant.
- Early runoff may point to wetter-than-expected substrate or false drain.
- Late or absent runoff may point to drier-than-expected substrate or a delivery issue.
False drain: water runs through without wetting the substrate evenly. Common causes include poor dripper placement, channeling, difficulty rewetting overly dry substrate, or excessive irrigation.
Verify daily runoff
- Record applied water and runoff for each sample plant across the daily irrigation window.
- Calculate each plant’s runoff percentage and compare it with the plan’s daily projection and target.
- Look at differences between sample plants before relying on the zone average.
Runoff % = collected runoff ÷ applied water × 100
